I was surprised by what Brosgol did with what could have been a terribly cliched device. Brosgol builds up our trust in the character and then quickly tears it down — and this is all done with the perfect balance of dialogue and images. I loved the art: Emily looked like she had blood flowing out of her eyes. I don’t know why she hated herself, her mom, her friend and people who actually try to be nice to her. Anya Borzakovskaya is the daughter of a Russian immigrant.
Just the fact that this book is a YA graphic novel makes my heart soar with joy. Review quote “Anya’s Ghost is a masterpiece, of YA literature hhost of comics. She’s embarrassed by her family, self-conscious about her body, and she’s pretty much given up on fitting in at school. Or so she thinks. I read this a couple years ago and gave it five stars, thought it was amazing, hadn’t read anything at this level that was this good, but now, having read a lot more YA Graphic Novels, I brosbol this down a bit, maybe a 3.
The characters are great, too. And that hot guy? She was running anay the killer when she fell down the well.

Description Anya could really use a friend. What made me feel uncomfortable about this book: This graphic novel by Vera Brosgol comes across, at least initially, as a typical teen coming-of-age story. What I loved about this comic: View all 29 comments. She gets by just fine in school, but her mother is always pressuring her to eat more, make some nice new friends, go to church, etc.
As if it being five o’clock on a Friday of a three day weekend isn’t exciting enough, I found a blue library envelope on my doorstep this afternoon with a brand spanking new copy of Anya’s Ghost inside.
When Anya returns home, the finger bone is missing. It’s definitely one of those coming to age type book, growing up fro experience type of books but in a fictional and illustrated way. Anya’s Ghost is a coming-of-age   ghost story  in graphic novel format.

I’m talking Golum “my precious” impersonation inspiring gorgeous. Of all the things Anya expected to find at the bottom of an old well, a new friend was not one of them. It also had a great message about how we never know and understand fully what others are thinking or gbost they are going through.
